Velociraptor Brawl

January 14, 2021 by danvoltzart

Okay, by now we all know that I quite enjoy painting velociraptors. This piece was no exception! Only this time, it’s three velociraptors. I also very much enjoy mixing prehistoric animals with modern settings, which is why this raptor brawl is going down at the local gas station. If you like this piece and want to have some feathery dinosaurs hanging on your wall, you can find prints in my store!

Jupiter Patrol

December 14, 2020 by danvoltzart

Jupiter is easily one of the most compelling planets in the solar system. It’s big, it’s mysterious, it’s… pretty far away. And it has its own mini-solar system of moons. Maybe that’s why I paint these gas giants so often. Anyway, I really wanted to show a sense of scale to the galaxy with this piece–I wanted that ship to look very tiny. Hope you like the piece! If you’d like to purchase prints of this piece, you can find […]

Triceratops in the Rain

October 25, 2020 by danvoltzart

It’s all about the Triceratops. The other day, my wife and I went to William O’Brien State Park here in Minnesota. There was a light drizzle when our hike started. But that light rain quickly became quite the downpour. And that’s what inspired this particular piece. I wanted to add the Triceratops herd to this piece because, well, Trikes are a bit of a challenge. I can paint a velociraptor with no problem, but I don’t paint a lot of […]

A woman reads books in a post apocalyptic setting.

Post Apocalyptic Book Club

October 15, 2020 by danvoltzart

I’m not sure where the idea for this post-apocalyptic book club came from, but the image popped into my head in essentially this form. I don’t always like to paint like that. Usually, I like to thumbnail. (I don’t thumbnail as much as I should, but it’s still an important part of my process.) So, the idea here is that even in a post-apocalyptic future, people will still want to read. And this seemed like a nice, quiet spot for […]

A science fiction painting showing an astronaut entering an ominous airlock, illuminated by flashlights.

The Airlock

October 1, 2020 by danvoltzart

So, I had this image in my head of an astronaut entering a rather ominous looking airlock. And that was really the only basis for this painting when I started. As I got into it, I also wanted to try to do some cool things with the light (and, specifically, with the light changing based on the environment). I’m happy with the way this piece turned out. I accomplished what I set out to do, and that’s something. I also […]

Velociraptor Search and Rescue

August 21, 2020 by danvoltzart

Fighting wildfires is brutal business. Just look check out the news (especially as California burns in 2020). That’s probably where the image of this particular piece came from. I’ve painted a lot of dinosaurs-in-our-world pieces, so it made sense to me that certain species of dino might be incorporated into our lives like canines are. And, of course, velociraptor is an excellent choice for that. Mostly because they’re smart, relatively small, and tough (in theory?). Anyway, this image came into […]

Space Whale Escort

August 10, 2020 by danvoltzart

I’m not sure where the idea for this piece came from. Space whales are certainly not anything that I can take credit for inventing. The idea is as old as science fiction (or thereabouts). But I do like the idea of lifeforms that reside in space. It’s just kinda cool. I also like the idea of people doing right by nature. So I the story of this space whale popped into my head. It’s a rare creature, and its centenary […]

The Lighthouse is Watching

July 22, 2020 by danvoltzart

One of my favorite novels of all time is Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation, although I dearly love the entire Southern Reach trilogy. That novel is what inspired this particular artwork. Which is funny, because it’s not like this painting is necessarily a scene out of the novel. I mean, it could be. But I wanted something that hit the mood more than was a direct adaptation. Hence, the vines and the skeletons. And, if you look really closely at the lighthouse, you might […]

Snow Crash

July 6, 2020 by danvoltzart

The summer in Minnesota has been mostly mild so far. But last week got really, really hot. So, naturally, I started thinking about winter. I think that’s where this piece came from. At first, I was thinking about a ship stuck in the ice. But slowly, it morphed into a more sci-fi-style setting. And, if you crash on an ice planet, you’re definitely going to want to salvage what you can. So the focus of the piece, then, became the […]

USS Endeavour – First of Her Class

July 1, 2020 by danvoltzart

So, a few months back, I was commissioned to design a starship and create some cool art. The starship would be the setting for a Star Trek Adventures actual play podcast (for those who don’t know, an actual play podcast is kind of like a tabletop role-playing-game radio show… You get to watch other people play an RPG and it’s way more fun than it sounds!). Anyway, the Endeavour herself has some pretty nifty features. The most interesting is the […]
