In the early 2270s, the USS Enterprise underwent a major refit. The result is one of my favorite starship designs of all time.
Whatever in-universe explanation there might be for the refit, the real-life reason was pretty simple: Star Trek needed an Enterprise that would look great on the big screen. And because of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the franchise finally had the budget to create–in my opinion–one of the greatest miniatures of all time (I say miniatures… but the model is, what, like six feet long?)
Either way, the Constitution-refit design is one of my all-time favorites. That, along with the Galaxy class starship, will always be what I think of when I think about the Enterprise.
